Why celebrate Pi Day when you can celebrate Pi Week? The math department invites faculty, staff and students to participate in these events March 11-14:
Problem of the Day
WHAT: There will be 3 different levels of problems, related to π, posted each day on the bulletin board outside the Math Department in Science West. The levels will be basic, thought-provoking and challenging.
HOW: Students may pick up an entry form in the Math Department and turn in their solution in the blue box in the Math Department.
WHEN: Monday March 11, Tuesday March 12, Wednesday March 13 – solutions must be turned into Math Department each day by 4 pm.
PRIZES: A winner will be drawn daily from correct solutions for each level.
AMAZING MATH RACE
WHAT: Teams of students will receive math questions that they must answer and then take their solutions to the next stop of the Amazing Math Race somewhere on campus. There will be 5 total questions.
HOW: Students must sign up on Monday, March 11 or Tuesday, March 12 in the Math Department.
WHEN: Students must have some time available to ‘race’ between 8:00 am and 1:00 pm on Wednesday, March 12 or Thursday, March 14. This is a timed race.
PRIZES: The three teams with the fastest times will receive prizes.
DIGITS OF PI
WHAT: Students will recite as many consecutive digits of pi as they can.
HOW: Students must meet with their instructor. For students not currently in a math course, they may come to the Math Department and find an available instructor.
WHEN: Schedule with your instructor for some time between Monday, March 11 and Wednesday, March 13.
PRIZES: The student reciting the most digits correctly will win a prize.
MY PI DAY
WHAT: Students will find out on which digit of pi their birthday starts, known as their Pi Day.
HOW: Students may come to the Student Center Lobby and check their Pi Day.
WHEN: Wednesday, March 13 from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm.
PRIZES: The students with the smallest and largest Pi Day will win prizes.
FUNDRAISER: SLICE OF PIE
On Thursday, March 14 in the Student Center Lobby, we will be selling slices of pie for $1. All of the money received will go toward student scholarships. Pie sales start at 8:00 am and will go until 1:00 pm or until the pie runs out.
