Letter Forms (Art - Design) Exhibition Reception
This exhibition brings together three artists who use typography/calligraphy/letterforms in their creative practices. We are celebrating one area where the interests of all our art programs come together.
Alexa Clavijo is a multi-faceted visual and performance artist living in St. Louis, Missouri. Clavijo uses sculpture, performance, photography, installation and video to explore and understand her surroundings. She investigates contemporary topics such as the effect technology has on mental health, abstract identity and disfunction in everyday objects to name a few.
Eso Tolson is a multi-disciplinary artist and designer based in Memphis, TN. He specializes in hand-lettering for branding, editorial, and commercial projects. As principal and creative director at Memphis based design agency Cheers Creative, he also builds brand visuals and websites for creative professionals and social causes. As an artist, Eso lends his hand lettering style to commissioned projects for clients including Downtown Memphis Commission, Story Gatherings Conference, Teach For America, and social activist/comedian Franchesca Ramsey.
Cheryl Wassenaar is a visual artist who explores the function of text in a hybrid practice of painting, sculpture, and design. She works primarily with found and fabricated commercial signage, repurposing the discarded wood into visual metaphors of communication that borrow from the language of modernist painting and contemporary advertising. Her latest body of work uses signmaker's vinyl and manipulated objects for site-specific installations, often collaborating with a writer or poet.
