The issue of poverty, hunger, and homelessness have been of interest to STLCC-Meramec since at least 2002 when service learning classes began researching those topics. In 2005, efforts were formalized and Hunger Awareness Month was born to educate students and staff by facilitating events including a campus food drive and the Empty Bowls Luncheon. In 2013, the newly formed Brown Bag Café, a part of the Student Assistance Program, became the major beneficiary of the food drive and the luncheon. After SAP has changed its name and structure to SARC, students have continued to receive food assistance.
Though it has taken many forms, the Empty Bowls Luncheon always provides some type of lunch and a hand-made bowl created by the Ceramics Department for a small donation.
